PHD Thesis “Model-Based Thermal Management, Control & Optimisation for Die-Casting Machines”

IN COOPERATION WITH THE AUTOMATION AND CONTROL INSTITUTE (ACIN), TU WIEN

Join our AIT PhD programme with around 150 international students, carried out in cooperation with renowned universities – For this specific PhD position, you will enroll at TU Wien and benefit of a close cooperation with the Automation and Control Institute (ACIN) and an internationally active, research consortium.

  • Throughout this PhD project you will research on the development of new methods for thermal management, control and optimisation of die-casting machines.
  • Under the guidance of your interdisciplinary team, you will be responsible for the development of physics-based and data-driven models and the development and application of calibration and model-order reduction strategies.
  • You will evaluate and enhance sensor systems, encompassing temperature sensors, thermal imaging etc.
  • Based on your analysis, you will design sensor fusion systems and soft sensors to assess non-measurable system quantities.
  • You will design closed-loop process control strategies with a focus on process stability, product quality and optimality (energy, production, time).
  • You will validate your results and strategies in test environments directly on-site at our industrial cooperation partners.
  • You will participate in national and international workshops and conferences to present your work and will publish your results in scientific journals.
  • You will accumulate experience in a research field, that deals with digital and green transformation.
  • You will gain experience in a group of international engineers and scientists and, by working together also with our industrial partners, you have the opportunity to build up your professional network.
Your qualifications as an Ingenious Partner:
  • Master’s degree in mathematics, automatic control, computer science, mechatronics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, physics
  • Good programming skills in Matlab/Simulink
  • Excellent technical understanding & analytical capabilities
  • Interested in reading and writing scientific publications and enjoy application-oriented questions from industry
  • High level of commitment and team spirit
  • Very good command of written and spoken English, basic skills in German would be an asset
Details:
  • Duration of the PhD project: 3 years
  • Start date: as soon as possible
  • You will spend approximately 80% of your research work and study purposes at ACIN and around 20% at AIT - This allows a continuous exchange and permanent use of resources of both cooperation partners.
  • You will be supervised by one of our AIT colleagues from the Competence Unit “Complex Dynamical Systems” from the Center for Vision, Automation & Control, as well as by scientists and engineers of our center. As you will conduct your research activities also at ACIN, you will also benefit here from a supervisor.
What to expect:

EUR 45.882,20,-- gross per year, for 40 h / week. In addition to numerous events, seminars and networking opportunities, there will be additional company benefits. As a research institution, we are familiar with the supervision and execution of PhD theses, and we are looking forward to supporting you accordingly!
